What are best practices?

Our catch-and-release best practices are science-based guidelines for handling fish in ways that reduce stress and give them the best possible chance of surviving after release. They’re grounded in current research and designed to give anglers simple, practical ways to put conservation into practice every time they fish.

Our best practices are organized around three simple Principles, with additional Tips to help you put them into practice on the water.

Principles

Keep Fish Wet Principles address the elements of the angling event that are most in an angler’s control.  Our three Principles are universal and can be used for a wide range of species and settings, and are backed by scientific evidence.

Keep Fish Wet Tips help support the broader Principles.  Most Tips do not require you to purchase more gear, but rather spend a little more time on preparation and mindfulness before heading out for a trip and while on the water.  This list provides simple and easy actions that every angler can do.
